Abstract:
Exposes the confusion, misrepresentation of intent, and lack of community dialogue underlying the battle between the Sand and Sea Coastal Users Group, a pro-fishing lobby, and the West Coast Working Group (WCWG) over the latter's alleged proposal to create a series of protected marine reserves and 'no-take zones' on Auckland's West Coast, from Kaipara Harbour to Port Waikato. Relates the assertions by WCWG head Ken Catt that the organisation has no such plans, but reveals documents which contradict him. Explores the involvement of Forest & Bird, Waitakere mayor Bob Harvey, and Conservation Minister Chris Carter in the situation, focusing on the lack of public representation in the consultation process.
