Matauranga maori

Mātauranga is dynamic and ever evolving within a contemporary society.  It has a strong oral tradition and is transferred in various forms including whakapapa (genealogies), waiata (songs), mōteatea (chants), pūrākau (stories), maramataka (calendars), whakairo (carvings), rongoa (healing and medicine), hi ika (fishing) and mahinga kai (cultivation). Whilst some features of mātauranga are similar across hapū and iwi, there are significant regional differences. Mātauranga is local knowledge by nature, therefore people from one rohe (region) will not speak about the mātauranga from another rohe.
