The Integrated Kaipara Harbour Management Group (IKHMG) was initiated by Ngāti Whātua in 1996 and formalised in 2005 in response to hapū, iwi and community concerns that Kaipara Moana was in poor health and urgent united action would be needed to restore her mauri.

Ko ahau te Kaipara, ko te Kaipara ko ahau

The IKHMG approach values and incorporates Mātauranga Māori (Māori knowledge) and Western knowledge paradigms.

IKHMG aims to reduce the amount of sediment, over 700,000 tonnes, that filters into the Kaipara Harbour every year.  We do this by partnering with different groups and agencies on projects that include riparian planting, predator control and education.
