Abstract:
Trolling operations of the 65ft steel stern trawler 'Jay Elaine' during the month of Feb 1972, are described and discussed. In five trips based on Onehunga, during which considerable time was spent searching, 23,318 lb of albacore were taken in 172 h of fishing. The best catches were off the Waikato, with promising indications off the Kaipara. The catch rate of 112 albacore per hundred hook h compares favourably with the 1968 East Coast average of 80, and the 1950-68 Californian fleet average of 70 per hundred hook h. The temp of the albacore body rises by up to 10{degree}C above water temp shortly after capture, and declines when a fish has ceased struggling. This decline is hastened by transferring the fish into a bath of sea water and ice.
