The Waitangi sheet area contains a wide variety of mineral commodities. Especially significant economically are high quality ceramic clays, extensive limestone deposits, rock and sand aggregates, a large geothermal field, and hot and cold mineral springs. The main centre of population and industry in the sheet area is the city and harbour of Whangarei, which has cement, glass making and fertiliser works, and an oil refinery. (auths)
