Abstract:
Kaipara area is described in vol, pp 89-95, 103-4. Kauri forests are described in Vol 2, chapter 6, "Our naturalists note book". The first comprehensive early description of the landscape of the area surrounding the Arapaoa River and Te Pahi River. From travelling through fern land, open country, scrub and bush from Auckland through Riverhead he describes looking down from a high hill out onto the Kaipara. He comments extensively on teh mangroves and the resources of the vast intertidal areas, one of the first Pakeha to do so.
